How it works
Sale price = original price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). An extra discount applies to the already-reduced price, so 25% off plus 10% off is 32.5% off in total, not 35%. Sales tax is added to the final sale price.
Worked example
$80 with 25% off = $60. An extra 10% off takes 10% of $60, so the price is $54.00. You save $26.00, which is 32.5% off overall.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the percent off ÷ 100 and subtract it. 30% off $50 is $50 − $15 = $35.
Is 20% off plus 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. The second discount comes off the reduced price, so it's 28% off overall.
Is tax calculated before or after the discount?
In most US states, on the discounted price.
How do I find the original price from the sale price?
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount ÷ 100). $60 after 25% off came from $80.
