How it works

The tip is the bill multiplied by the tip percentage. Add it to the bill for the total, then divide by the number of people to split it evenly.

Tip = bill × tip% ÷ 100  ·  Total = bill + tip  ·  Each = total ÷ people

Many people tip on the pre-tax amount. To do that, enter the subtotal before tax as the bill, then add the tax back when you pay.

Worked example

Dinner for three comes to $84.50 and you want to leave 18%.

Tip = 84.50 × 0.18 = $15.21. Total = $99.71. Split three ways, each person pays $33.24 (the extra cent goes to whoever's feeling generous).

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant in the US?

For sit-down service, 15–20% is standard, and 20% or more is common for great service. Many people tip less or nothing at counter-service spots.

Should I tip on the total before or after tax?

Either is acceptable. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is traditional; tipping on the total is simpler and slightly more generous.

What's an easy way to figure 20% in my head?

Move the decimal one place left to get 10%, then double it. For an $84.50 bill, 10% is $8.45, so 20% is $16.90.

How do I split a bill unevenly?

Work out each person's items first, add the same tip percentage to each, then everyone pays their own total.
